A new crowdfunding for rewilding initiative is underway by the community of Langholm in the south of Scotland to purchase a significant area of land for nature protection and rewilding, which includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The team is aiming to raise £3.4m before the end of October 2020.
The initiative ticks several of the boxes we value, including support from established organizations including the John Muir Trust (which has pledged £100,000), RSBP Scotland, The Woodland Trust, Borders Forest Trust and The Revive Coalition. The Revive Coalition is a group of organisations in Scotland that have come together to reform the use of grouse moors for more economically and environmentally sustainable use.
The project is led by the charismatic Kevin Cumming, who is passionate about restoring peatland, ancient woodland and creating new native woodlands to increase the diversity of wildlife in Scotland and contribute to the fight against climate change.
The team behind the initiative have worked hard to develop a careful and independent feasibility study, balancing biodiversity with economic opportunity. The plan aims to create a new Nature Reserve to protect and preserve the habitat of breeding hen harriers. Doing this and other initiatives will help stimulate wildlife tourism and recreation in the area.
The moor has extensive peatland, which acts a sink for carbon. Protecting and restoring this natural resource, which in the past has been drained to remove bogs, helps reduce the impact of man-made climate change.
Donors are recognized with a number of different rewards, ranging from names on entry signs to the land, through to invitation to an annual dinner hosted by those working on the project.
To support this fantastic project, please visit the intiative’s homepage, or donate to the cause through Let’s Rewild. 100% of the amounts donated through our website will be passed through to the initiative, with no platform fee.
