After 12,000 years, European bison, wild horses, water buffalo and other megafauna return to long-lost habitat in Eastern and Southern Europe. Goal of the project is ecological restoration to promote biodiversity conservation, climate change resilience,  and sustainable management of vulnerable landscapes under global change. At the same time, the project develops job and income opportunities that support the rural economy – as drivers for sustainable development.

Through their grazing, trampling, nutrient redistribution and migration patterns, large grazers help to restore the indigenous plant diversity in natural areas. By creating more open spaces in dense vegetation, more dynamics and more variation in the landscape will be created, providing new habitats for plants, bees, butterflies, birds, reptiles and large and small mammals.

The True Nature Foundation supports community-led ecological restoration and conservation that benefits both people and their environment. We collaborate with local authorities and communities, aiming at local capacity building in biodiversity conservation and ecotourism.
Our primary focus areas:
  • Ecological restoration through trophic rewilding,
  • Development of new nature reserves in abandoned or degraded rural areas,
  • Reintroduction of lost species, and
  • Developing nature-based income generation opportunities for rural communities.
With your help long lost wildlife like the Wisent (European bison), aurochs, wild horses and other large herbivores will return to European ecosystems – with cascading effects on wild flowers and pollinators, like bees and butterflies, and bird populations.

The funds raised will be used for animal (bison, wild horses etc) reintroduction, including transport and release activities, establishment of new nature reserves, habitat restoration, veterinary care, training, monitoring and patrols by trained community rangers.
